Middle of Nowhere Going Somewhere {Film Festival} Park City, UT
Park City awarded Best Director in Drama this year to Ava DuVernay, the first black female to achieve the Sundance Film Festival accolade, for Middle of Nowhere, her second feature film after transitioning from a marketing and publicity career. The film fest firebrand founded The DuVernay Agency in 1999 and went on to orchestrate pub pushes for several African-American film projects, including Invictus, Dreamgirls, and, most recently, The Help. Two years ago, she formed the African-American Film Festival Releasing Movement (AFFRM), advancing the front lines of independent, African-American film exposure. "We collaborate with local black film festivals in select markets, working with them as 'field agencies,' says DuVernay. "It allows us to provide films of color with exposure within a modest budget." Her first film, I Will Follow, established her as an artist with an upward trajectory, and Middle of Nowhere cemented her reputation as a visionary and compelling storyteller. Filmed in less than three weeks in and around downtown LA, Middle of Nowhere was completed for less than $1 million. The return on that investment promises to be handsome indeed. –JZ |
