Deer Valley Resort

Park City, Utah

by Christy Rosen

The Draw

Pristine Wasatch Mountain slopes covered in fluffy snow powder beckon the avid skier. There is a clear reason that the readers of Ski magazine have rated Deer Valley as the #1 ski resort in North America for two years in a row. Not only does Deer Valley boast some of the finest skiing in the world, but they have taken personal service to a whole new level. In addition to perfectly groomed slopes, other amenities include ski valets, on-site child care and gourmet dining in three luxury day lodges. The world’s first skiing superstar, Stein Eriksen, acts as the Director of Skiing at Deer Valley. The Norwegian born Olympic gold medalist has been instrumental in revolutionizing the sport of alpine skiing and has helped ensure that Deer Valley is a leader in the world of elite skiing. The Deer Valley Ski Resort recently invested over $8 million dollars in improvements for the 2008/2009 ski season. The world class skiing options include Alpine, Nordic, Heli, Cat and Teleskiing. Whichever type of sport you prefer, you can be guaranteed a premier ski getaway at the Deer Valley Ski Resort.

Luxury Accommodations - Stein Eriksen Lodge

The Stein Eriksen Lodge is the first Utah property to receive the Mobile 5 Star Award and is regarded as one of the finest mountain resorts in the world. Located in Park City, the Stein Eriksen Lodge offers ski in / ski out accessibility. Patrons can also enjoy the ski valets that assist guests with their equipment before and after skiing. Upon entering the scenic two-story ski locker room, you will be greeted with a hot beverage and boot warmers. Inside the Lodge you will be greeted by classic Norwegian décor. After a long active day, you can retreat to The Grand Suite which offers 3,000 square feet, five bedrooms and a fully equipped kitchen.

The Lodge also arguably houses the best restaurant in town: The Glitretind, which specializes in fresh seasonal American cuisine. The emphasis is on providing exquisite food in an environmentally friendly manner. Executive Chef Zane Holmquist believes that using local or regionally grown produce and organic meats provides a superior dining experience. The Stein Eriksen Lodge boasts a 10,000 bottle wine cellar with over 750 different selections. A private wine tasting and seminar with a sommelier is easy to arrange. To top it off, The Lodge offers lavish house-made chocolates. Executive Pastry Chef Raymond Lammers uses Callebaut and Valrhona chocolate to create confections that are truly decadent.

The Icing on the Cake

The world class skiing is certainly the biggest draw to Deer Valley in the winter, but Park City has more to offer. Don’t miss out on a visit to the Utah Olympic Park, home to the 2002 Winter Olympics that included ski jumping, bobsledding, luge and skeleton. Each venue has been transformed into a public facility. This is your chance to skate on “the fastest ice on earth”, go on a bobsled ride or watch freestyle aerial shows. If your travels take you to Utah in January, Park City is host to the Sundance Film Festival. Regarded as one of the premier film events in the world, the festival is a great way to see some of the finest work in film.
